Press Release:
"On Friday 14th October 2016 Dr Geoffrey Gibbons, Organist at St Tudy Church and current President of the Cornwall Organists’ Association was presented with the British
Empire Medal for his services to church music and the community. The Lord-Lieutenant of Cornwall, Colonel Edward Bolitho OBE presented him with his medal in the beautiful surroundings of St Tudy Church in the presence of his wife, family and friends. Also present was the Chairman of Cornwall Council, Councillor Ann Kerridge.
Dr, Gibbons took up his first organist appointment in 1946 while a law student at Birmingham University and has held four posts as organist since then: at St Mary and St Ambrose Church, Edgbaston, Henley in Arden Parish Church (for 34 years) and then at the private chapel of The Earl of Aylesford at Packington Hall that houses the ‘Handel’ organ. In 2004 he was appointed to his current post as organist at St. Tudy Church.
He was Secretary of the Birmingham Organists’ Association in the 1950s and 1960s and Solicitor to the Incorporated Association of Organists for 20 years until 1994. Professionally a solicitor until retirement in 1994, he was for eight years a deputy Circuit Judge and was for many years Honorary Consul of the Republic of Tunisia. He was twice Mayor of the Metropolitan Borough of Solihull in 1974 and 1984 and in 1999 obtained his degree as Doctor of Philosophy in History at Warwick University.
In 2003 Dr. Gibbons and his wife Hazel retired to St Tudy where they have both become invaluable and incredibly hard-working members of the community."
