The Clinker's Cross For The Rememberance Service

To mark the Centenary of the First World War, The Society for All Artists (www.saa.co.uk)

(partnered with The Royal British Legion), challenged SAA Members to paint poppies, to be exhibited at their HQ in Newark, Notts. Those members in turn could get fellow art club members involved too. As a member of SAA, I encouraged the ladies to join me in submitting our work.

The Clinker’s Art Group were inspired to paint 11 paintings and you were encouraged to donate which we did - £50.00 to the Legion for their excellent work.

Once the originals were sent off, the Group decided it would be nice to take part in the St Tudy Remembrance/Armistice Sunday by placing “a wreath” at the service. However, our wreath became a cross made up of 11 photos of the originals. The wooden cross was constructed by Mike Smith.

The Group were then asked by The History Group to do something for their Remembrance Exhibition and a replica cross was made (by Roger Harnett ably assisted by his wife Caroline) for display in the Village Hall.

There was no discussion as to what we would produce individually, but when we came to put the paintings together, you would have thought there had been “a plan” - we were delighted with the result.
